Code of conduct

A room everyone can build in.

The Build Room is for anyone who wants to learn, build and connect, whatever their background or experience. This code is short because the idea is simple: look after each other.

It applies to everyone at our events and in our online spaces: attendees, organisers, partners, speakers, mentors and volunteers.

  1. Be kind and welcoming

Everyone starts somewhere. Help people who are newer than you, ask questions freely and be generous with each other. Nobody should feel they're in the wrong room because of their job title, their experience or how much code they've written.

  2. No harassment of any kind

We don't tolerate harassment or discrimination, in person or online. That includes offensive comments or jokes, intimidation, following or stalking, unwelcome physical contact or sexual attention, and deliberately derailing talks or activities.

That includes harassment because of someone's age, disability, gender identity and expression, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, ethnicity or nationality, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, appearance and level of experience.

  3. Respect people's work, ideas and data

Credit people for what they made. Ask before you build on someone else's idea, and talk to your team before taking a shared project further. Don't share anything a teammate or a demo shows you that they'd rather keep private.

  4. Photos and recording

We may take photos and short videos at events to share what happened. If you'd rather not appear, tell an organiser and we'll leave you out, and if we miss you, we'll remove it from our channels. Ask before you photograph or record anyone, and respect it if they say no.

  5. Use AI tools safely

Many of our events use AI tools. Don't paste other people's personal or private data into them, and don't use them to make anything that harasses, deceives or impersonates someone. Only paste in code or ideas you have the right to share, and check what the tool gives you: you're responsible for what you build. When in doubt, use made-up data.

  6. If someone breaks this code

Organisers may have a word, ask the person to leave the event, or ask them not to come to future ones. We'll take every report seriously and, where we can, let the person who raised it know what we've done.

Retaliating against anyone who reports is a breach of this code.

  7. How to report something

Talk to any organiser at the event and we'll find somewhere quiet to listen. Or email hello@thebuildroom.uk, during or after the event. Reports are handled confidentially and shared only with the people who need to act on them. We won't share your name without your permission unless someone is at risk or the law requires it. You can report something that happened to someone else, too.

If you or anyone else is in immediate danger, call 999 first.

Thanks for helping make every room a good one to be in.
